When to See a Doctor for Anorectal Symptoms

See a doctor if anal bleeding lasts more than a few days or is heavy, if pain is severe enough that you avoid passing stool, if there is pus or persistent discharge near the anus, if a lump will not go back in, or if there is fever, weight loss or increasing weakness alongside your symptoms.

Symptoms that warrant prompt assessment

These are the situations where waiting rarely helps.

  • Bleeding lasting more than a few days, or heavy bleeding
  • Severe pain on passing stool, or pain that makes you avoid the toilet
  • Pus or persistent discharge from an opening near the anus
  • A lump that has become hard, very painful or discoloured
  • A lump that no longer returns inside after a bowel movement
  • Fever with anal pain and swelling
  • Unexplained weight loss, weakness or a change in bowel habit

Symptoms that can be reviewed at a routine appointment

Mild itching, occasional small streaks of blood with constipation, or discomfort that settles after correcting stool consistency can usually be reviewed at a normal appointment.

That said, if these have gone on for weeks without improving, treat them as a reason to be examined rather than something to continue managing at home.

What to bring to your consultation

A few things make the consultation more useful.

  • Earlier prescriptions, reports or discharge summaries for the same complaint
  • A list of current medicines, including Ayurvedic and over-the-counter ones
  • Details of any blood-thinning medication, diabetes or blood pressure treatment
  • Notes on when symptoms began and what makes them better or worse
  • Records of any previous anorectal surgery or abscess drainage

Where you can be seen

Our main clinic on Bariyatu Road at Booty More, Ranchi, sees patients from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. We also have centres at Namkum and Ara Gate in Ranchi, and at Mango in Jamshedpur; for those, please call to confirm the consultation day and time.
